She was enjoying the fluffy couch cover. Now she’s wandering about being mischeivous.

On a scale, how would you rate rat ownership? Thinking it would make more sense than a dog when I move out.

Unlike hamsters they actually like people and enjoy attention.

Its great and some can be fantastic pets. Just be wary of where you get them from and their upbringing etc. I have 4, one is really friendly (the one pictured) two of the others are fairly sociable but one prefers to stay in the cage and I think its because she had a bad upbringing. I try to socialise her as much as possible but she just cant get used to people.

Yea I heard rat breeders. I initially laughed, then realized it made sense. Still would be an embarrassing thing to tell people at parties.

I got mine from a pet store and that was a big mistake on reflection, I’d definitely look for a good breeder. Provided they’re well raised they’re great with people and love company. If you get them young enough they can even be litter trained and many have been known to answer to their name etc. Mine will run back to me when I pat my leg, never did get them to learn their names though.

Two tone? Is the front bit wild?

Someone living near my brother released some white rats into the wild. You can now see all kinds of mixtures scurrying around in the undergrowth.

All of mine are two tone, only two are brown though. There might be some wild rat in the breed somewhere, I have no idea really.

Basically all pet rats are “Norway rats” they come in lots of color combos, but the two tone or “hooded” pattern is most common.

Males tend to be friendlier than females, but the biggest differentiator between personalities is, how young you bring them home. Ideally you want to adopt a rat as soon as it is eating solid food. Definitely finding a good breeder helps, but more for health issues and lifespan than behavior.

My buddy raised rats. Some were pets and some were food.

You wanted to make sure which was which before you stuck your finger in the cage.

Yeah many of them are raised for feed. A friend had a snake that he bred rats for.
